TRENDS AND TRENDSETTERS IN SPECIALTY TOBACCO RETAILING
Habana Cuba Cigar Lounge Taps Owner’s Cuban Heritage
Miami Lakes, FL - The Habana Cuba Cigar Company, producer and distributer of Habana Cuba and Oliveros premium cigars, has opened a retail store and lounge at the Park Center Shoppes in Miami Lakes, Fla. Called the Habana Cuba Cigar Lounge, the new shop held a grand opening celebration on June 24 featuring live Latin music, Cuban food, and a dominoes tornament.
Company owner Rafael Nodal and parnters Hank Bischoff and Julio Varela sell not only the full line of Habana Cuba and Oliveros cigars, which the company produces at its own factory in Santiago, Dominican Republic, but also a wide selection of leading premium and specialty boutique cigars.
The high-end store features a spacious walk-in humidor, fully appointed lounge, and an outdoor patio area. The business has applied for a beer and wine license.
“For three generations, my family has grown tobacco,” Nodal told the Miami Herald. “They played an essential role in the production of cigars. So, opening this lounge is what connects me to my ancestors.”
Nodal, who was born in Cuba and came to the United States in 1980 at age 15 with his family, said he and his partners wanted the lounge to have what he calls “Cuban mystique,” which is centered mostly around its cigars. Bischoff, a native of New Jersey who has spent most of his life in Florida, said the lounge stands apart from others thanks to its friendly atmosphere and wide selection of cigars.
The store is open Monday through Thursdays, 10am to 10pm; Friday and Saturday, 10am to 11 pm; and on Sundays, 10am to 6pm.

Excalibur Quest Awards $35,000 to Cigar Sleuths
New York - For eight weeks, cigar enthusiasts in eight cities across the country vied to find hidden cash treasure in General Cigar Company’s “Excalibur Quest.” The treasure hunt challenged cigar lovers to locate a box of Excalibur cigars stuffed with $5,000 and hidden somewhere within each host city: Albany, Baltimore, Buffalo, Houston, Milwaukee, St. Louis, San Antonio, and Tampa.
Every week, participating tobacconists in each of the designated cities received clues as to where the box of Excalibur cigars was hidden within their city. The hints were unveiled during weekly “clue reveal parties,” which were hosted in participating tobacco retail shops and heavily attended by cigar enthusiasts.
Albany was the first city in which the Quest was solved; it took two cigar enthusiasts in Albany only five weeks to cash in on the Quest. Clues such as “Sir Whit will upon you bestow a great gift” and “If you say ‘EMS,’ go now and be swift” led to the final treasure location - Albany’s Washington Avenue Armory.
Several cities garnered multiple winners, even as many as five, as was the case in Houston. Buffalo’s clues, however, proved a bit too challenging, as no one there found the cash.
The winners were: Albany: Scott Passino and Benjamin Pierson III; Baltimore: Patty Gavrilis and David Lowe; Houston: Michael Bialka; Brett H. Davis; Michael Gisclair; Peter Sodeika and Jed Stewart; Milwaukee: John W. Brannan; San Antonio: David Eugene Cummins; St. Louis: Jerry Rainey; Tampa: James Gardner and Jeffery Kritz.

Counterfeit Charges Dropped in Miami
Miami, FL - Federal prosecutors have dropped counterfeiting charges against a Little Havana cigar merchant who was accused of selling fake Cuban cigars whose trademarks belong to Altadis U.S.A.
The U.S. attorney’s office withdrew the charges against Feliberto Marimon in October after determining there were flaws in the prosecution on the eve of trial. Marimon was not the salesperson who sold bundles of unlabeled cigars last year to an informant working with Miami-Dade police investigators, according to his attorney; it was one of his assistants. Co-defendant Miguel Guerra did plead guilty to two counterfeiting charges, however, and his sentencing is set for January 25.

BITS & PIECES
The Santa Fe Cigar Co., Santa Fe, N.M. and Kebob LLC’s 17 Tobacco Connection stores, headquarted in Boise, Idaho have signed on to the Smoker Friendly authorized dealer program.
“Tobacconist to the World” Nat Sherman is being forced out of the two-story retail space it has leased on the corner of Manhattan’s 42nd Street and Fifth Avenues for 16 years. Building owners are hoping to get a luxury retailer such as Gucci or Prada to pay top dollar for the space, a neighborhood trend stemming from the opening of Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’ Sean John store at Fifth Avenue and 41st Street. A family-owned company founded in the 1930s, Nat Sherman says it is close to signing a lease in the neighborhood for a new retail location. Ironically, the shop is one of the most luxurious tobacco retailers in New York featuring a smoking lounge and walk-in humidor appointed in old-world style woodworking.

NEW & NOTABLE
Custom Blends Franchise Services, York, Pa., has opened its second 7 Valleys Custom Blends franchise located in Gettysburg, Pa. The tobacco shops specialize in RYO and MYO products.
“I was a customer of 7 Valleys Custom Blends for years,” says Franchisee Shelly Cochran, “and I was looking for a job. They hired me and when I found that Gettysburg was available for franchising, I jumped at that opportunity.”
“Gettysburg is just an example of how fast Custom Blends can grow,” says Mark Wolfe, Director of Franchise Services. “A qualified and approved franchisee can contact us, and after the required disclosure and approval process, can get their store open in less then 60 days. We can turn key an existing location or coordinate a build out of a new strip mall or shopping center.”
Targeting Tucson’s trendy business crowd, husband and wife owners Jeffrey and Camerone Parker have opened Stogie & Vine, a new upscale cigar and wine lounge featuring purple and red settees, plush rugs and a modern curved bar. The 2,000-square-foot lounge is equipped with a 1,000-bottle wine cellar, a large selection of scotch and a retail humidor, fifty private cigar lockers, and a private, members-only lounge. The lounge stocks 70 cigar brands and about 45 labels of wine. A VIP area is also available for private business meetings, as well as access to a copier and a fax machine, and Wi-Fi.
