Rochester Police Target Blunt Cigars, Cigar Wrappers Under Drug Paraphernalia Laws
Rochester, NY - In August, the Greater Rochester Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (GRANET) began visiting retail stores in New York state's Monroe County to initiate a program to eliminate the availability of drug paraphernalia in the local community which included certain legal tobacco products, including blunt cigars, blunt wrappers, and rolling
papers. Retailers were requested or ordered to stop selling the items and/or remove them from shelves, citing New York State law that states it is illegal for anyone to possess drug-related paraphernalia with intent to sell.
GRANET claimed that blunts and blunt wrappers "serve no legitimate purpose"
other than for smoking marijuana and therefore they constitute "drug paraphernalia."
The New York Area Convenience Store Association (NYACS) and the National Association of Tobacco Outlets (NATO) immediately filed official requests with GRANET and other relevant officials requesting that the enforcement action against retailers selling blunt
cigars cease immediately.
Both associations argued that blunt cigars are legal tobacco products and have not been nor should be classified as "drug paraphernalia." NATO, however, decided not to take a position on whether "cigar-type wrappers" fall into the category of "drug paraphernalia."
Blunt cigars have been manufactured and sold in the U.S. since at least the late 1950's, the term historically used to designate the size and shape of a specific style of cigar.

CAO's Micky Pegg Throws Out First Pitch at 'CAO Cigar Night'
Pittsburgh, PA - CAO sent their 'ace' national sales manager, Micky Pegg, to the mound to throw out the first pitch at the Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Houston Astros game at PNC Park on July 18. Pegg's honorary pitch officially kicked off the start of CAO Cigar Night at PNC Park, but the evening's festivities actually began hours prior to the game with a CAO-sponsored tailgate picnic, attended by CAO fans, local retailers, and hosted by CAO regional sales manager, Frank Kapp.
CAO Cigar Night at PNC Park drew over 300 fans that purchased seats in a designated smoke-friendly section of the stadium. Each guest received a 3-pack of CAO's award-winning cigars consisting of CAO Brazilia, CAO Italia, and CAO Criollo.
"This was an amazing opportunity for CAO and for the cigar industry, as a whole," Pegg stated. "The Pirates organization should be commended for bringing back some of the 'old-school' glamour of a bygone era when going to a ball game went hand-in-hand with enjoying a great cigar."
The marketing and event format have been so well received, according to event organizer Laurie Silverman of CX2 Marketing, LLC, that expansion of the Cigar Night program is expected for the 2006 Pirates baseball season. "CX2 Marketing will continue to work closely with the Pittsburgh cigar merchants and premium cigar factories to further enhance the closed loop promotion structure; ensuring that consumers, participating retailers, and cigar factories all win," said Silverman.

European Cigar Cult Journal Names Cigar Trophy 2005 Winners
Klosterneuburg, Austria - The Cigar Trophy awards, presented annually by the European Cigar Cult Journal to honor the hard work of those who produce the industry's best cigars, marked several departures this year. The 2005 edition of the awards were presented for the first time in the U.S.A., coinciding with the Retail Tobacco Dealers of America (RTDA) trade show. ECCJ editor-in-chief Reinhold Widmayer announced the winners and made the presentations at the Sheraton Hotel New Orleans on August 7.
Cigar Trophy 2005 for the first time not only presented awards for "Best Cigars" from the various countries of origin, but also the categories "Best Brand" and "Best Value."
Also new this year was a trophy for "Lifetime Achievement" which will be bestowed on an outstanding personality in the world of cigars each year. Carlos Fuente Sr. was the award's first recipient.
The winners of the individual categories have been chosen on the basis of evaluations carried out by the various ECCJ tasting panels and, for the first time, by taking tasting results from ECCJ readers into consideration.
Cigar Trophy was created in 1998 by the ECCJ and its founder and chief editor, Dr. Helmut Rome.
