Cornell & Diehl (C&D) has launched the Simply Elegant Series of pipe tobacco blends, paying tribute to a "simpler, yet more sophisticated era," according to blender Craig Tarler.
"We certainly have nothing against progress," Tarler explains, "but who among us doesn't secretly long for the days when a night on the town meant gentlemen dressed to the nines and ladies showcased in their finest and appreciative of the admiring looks from a room full of well turned out men?"
With Simply Elegant, C&D invites pipe enthusiasts to "step back...to a time when a pipeful of a fine premium tobacco was de rigeur and the hip flask was as essential an accessory as the cell phone is today." The series consists of six different blends:
Elegant Emu - Created by Craig Tarler and Bob Runowski featuring white cubed burley, Latakia, red Virginia, Perique and black Cavendish.
Red Carpet - A blend of red Virginias and Perique with a touch of Izmir for interest, pressed and sliced into flake form.
Sunday Picnic - Golden Virginias combined with Perique and Izmir Turkish for a delicious and memorable flake tobacco.
Opening Night - A blend of the finest red and bright Virginias pressed and sliced into flakes.
Manhattan Afternoon - Naturally sweet golden Virginia leaf with a drop of honey, sliced into flakes.
Interlude - Deep red Virginia with just a touch of honey to develop the natural sweetness of the leaf, then sliced into flakes. All six Simply Elegant blends are available in C&D's standard tinned blend pricing-$10 for 2 oz., $30 for 8 oz., and $50 for 1 lb.

Solopipe is a portable, self-igniting smoking pipe that combines a refillable and adjustable butane lighter with a high-quality tobacco smoking pipe. The sliding bowl cover allows customers to expose the chamber when they are ready to smoke. When done, the bowl can be covered and stored, allowing smokers to save time and clean out their pipe at a later time.
Alberto Montini is introducing a new pipe collection, Mastro de Paja Classica, tapping all of the expertise and experience of his staff of Italian pipemaking craftsmen but offering a range of interesting shapes and finishes at reasonable prices. Four finishes will be offered: Rusticated (Brown or Black); Sandblasted (Brown or Black); Smooth dark brown; and Smooth light brown in assorted shapes very close to classic but with some decorations in wood and sterling silver making each pipe unique. Retail prices will range from $85 to $125. Orders for the new line will be delivered starting in September.
