Cornell & Diehl Debuts Purple Cow, Kajun Kake
Cornell & Diehl, Inc., a small-batch hand-blender of pipe tobaccos based in Morganton, N.C., debuted two new pipe tobacco blends at the 2006 Chicagoland Pipe Show.
The team of Bob Runowski and Craig Tarler created purple Cow, which is the company's Chicagoland Pipe Show Blend for 2006. It is a classic American pipe tobacco of burleys, bright Virginia ribbon, Latakia, and a touch of maduro cigar leaf.
C&D is also introducing Kajun Kake. This blend starts out as beautiful, deep red Virginia that the Tarlers then process into the company's well-known Red Virginia Cavendish. A touch of spicy Perique is added before pressing the blend into an old-fashioned crumble cake, resulting in an extremely sweet tobacco.
Both new blends are offered in 2 oz. ($9.75 retail), 8 oz. ($30), and 1 lb. ($48) portions.

Savinelli Releases 2006 Collection Pipe, New Tundra Convertible Line
The first limited-production Savinelli Collection series was created in 1985. Limited in production to approximately 500 pieces, it is produced in a different shape or style each year. All are hand cut and sandblasted.
The 2006 Savinelli Collection pipe features a smooth bowl top and is the result of demands over the last few years for a classic straight shape billiard. The non-oxidizing acrylic mouthpiece features the usual Savinelli signature. As with all previous collection models, a brass year plate is recessed into the shank.
Each collection pipe comes with the Balsa System, which makes it convertible and includes one package of inserts, converter, and a commemorative year leaflet in very attractive packaging.
A number of Savinelli Collection series pipes prior to 2006 are still available on a very limited basis.
Savinelli has also released Tundra, a new series available in both smooth ($100 retail) and brownblast ($95 retail) finishes. It is also offered in a smooth EX version ($115 retail) featuring Savinelli's extra large bowl size. The pipes feature acrylic, non-oxidizing mouthpieces in an unusual "caramelized" color and are convertible to the Balsa system. In addition, the pipe shanks are stained from dark to light as they meet the mouthpiece for a nicer blend of color.

New Wessex Premium Pipe Tobaccos from XYZ Direct
Pipe and tobacco distributor XYZ Direct, Marietta, Ga. is importing two new pipe tobaccos to the U.S. market from German manufacturer Wessex targeting the premium segment.
Wessex Gold Brick Virginia Plug is an uncut plug of rich, old-fashioned Virginia that smokers slice themselves and rub out. It is presented in 100gm, foil-wrapped cubes, $16.00 suggested retail.
Wessex Burley Slice is an original Richmond recipe, full flavored and nutty, presented in 50gm tins. Suggested retail price is $10.90.
