Cuba, in Surprise Action, Imposes Widespread Public Smoking Ban

Havana - The Cuban government has banned the public use of its most famous export. An unexpected ban on smoking in public places was announced on January 7 and became effective only a month later.

The government's message has been contradictory, as it has consistantly subsidized cigarette costs. Over one-third of Cubans smoke, buying their beloved black tobacco cigarettes for two Cuban pesos, or less than 10 cents U.S. a pack, at the same time as they pick up their groceries. Both are included among the basic rations guaranteed monthly by the State.

Smoking is no longer permitted in theatres, shops, restaurants, buses, taxis and other enclosed public areas. Cigarette vending machines are banned entirely, and there is now an age limit of 16 for buying tobacco products.

As a young revolutionary, President Fidel Castro was rarely seen without a cigar in his mouth, but he quit the habit in 1986. Cigars are thought to be one of Cuba's top five exports and they continue to play a key economic role in the impoverished country.

Cuba is the latest in an increasing number of countries that have instituted nation-wide smoking bans. The world's first was in the Republic of Ireland which outlawed smoking in public places last year. Bans have since been imposed in Norway, Romania, and Italy.

Canadian Court Oks 'Cigarette Curtain' Law
Bans Retail Cigarette Displays

Ottawa - A Saskatchewan law banning tobacco displays has been reinstated by Canada's highest court.

Three years ago, Saskatchewan passed a law that said cigarettes could not be on display to people under 18. Stores and restaurants had to hide the merchandise from public view, putting their tobacco products in cabinets and behind curtains.

Saskatchewan's Court of Appeal struck down the law after tobacco companies appealed. With the law overturned, many businesses opened the curtains. But in a hearing on January 19, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Saskatchewan's display ban was back in force immediately. The judges said they'd give their reasons at a later date.

Diablo Cigar Halloween Launch Events Raise Hell

Chicago - Diablo cigars made a big nationwide debut over the Halloween weekend thanks to an integrated marketing campaign from General Cigar combining store events, PR, internet promos, parties, and more.

In-store sampling events were held at more than 340 tobacconists. These "All Diablo's Eve" sampling parties were marked by specially-created Diablo-branded POS kits, polo shirts, caps, bags, and spicy snack kits.

General developed its first-ever "guerrilla marketing initiative" to generate awareness and press coverage of its Diablo cigar launch. On October 27 - 28, a troupe of models and actors dressed as devils took to the streets of Chicago with copies of the Hades Herald newspaper in one hand and Diablo-branded briefcases in the other, visiting the financial district, commuter stations, and sports bars intended to drive consumers to sampling events.

Diablo was heavily promoted in conjunction with the Borgata Hotel and Casino's second annual Halloween bash at the MIXX nightclub in Atlantic City, N.J. More than 1,500 attendees in the 25-35 year-old demographic attended the "Pimps and Ho's" costume party.

De La Concha Pairs CAO Cigars with Potocki Vodka in Evening Tasting

CAO Cigars joined De La Concha Tobacconist in New York City in hosting an evening pairing their fine array of Nicaraguan cigars with exclusive Potocki W-dka. The unique grouping was further enhanced by critically acclaimed mixologist Jerri Banks imbuing cocktails with aromatic essences to compliment the flavor of CAO's premium cigars. Attendees had the opportunity to discover how well perfectly crafted vodka can accompany a world-class cigar. Jan-Roman Potocki and CAO regional sales manager Robert Dow were on hand to answer questions and make suggestions on the art of pairing vodka with cigars.

Heavenly, Puros Indios Help Trump, Leno Raise Funds for Disabled

Heavenly Cigar Company sponsored two recent ultra-posh charity events, hosted separately by magnate Donald Trump and "The Tonight Show's" Jay Leno, donating funds which benefitted Florida citizens with disabilities. Puros Indios Cigars teamed with Heavenly at Trump's event, and furnished a cigar roller, who fascinated and delighted guests by rolling fresh, personalized cigars.

The Abel Trust's Seventh Annual Gala, named "Under a Mandarin Moon," was held at Trump's historical Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, on Nov. 6, 2004; 1,500 guests attended. Heaven's Angels in Chinese formal dress offered guests samples of Heavenly's new Celestial Cognac cigars. Jim Palmer, National Baseball League Hall of Famer, served as the Gala Chair. All proceeds went to assist with employment support for Floridians suffering a wide variety of disabilities.

On Nov. 13, 2004, Heavenly participated in Jay Leno Live, a charity evening to benefit the non-profit Association of Retarded Citizens of Palm Beach County. The ARC helps improve the lives of children and adults with mental and developmental disabilities, through services, education and advocacy. In addition to a generous cash donation, Heavenly graced the crowd of 1,500 with several "Cigar Girl Angels."
